Hang Down Chestnut Forest Park

There is a natural habitat for Hang Down Chestnut, which is designated as a national nature treasure, in Hang Down Chestnut Forest Park.
Hang Down Chestnut trees differ from the ordinary chestnut trees in that their branches swing down like an umbrella. Their spectacular sight makes the visitors feel the mysterious charm of the natural wonder. There are many legends associated with the hanging down branches, such as the one that Kobo Daishi (a famous priest) swung down the branches so that people can pick the chestnuts, or that a Tengu (a mountain spirit with a long nose and wings) sat down on the branches to eat the chestnuts and the branches bent down with his weight. Looking at Hang Down Chestnut trees, you might feel it is no wonder that people of former days thought of such legends with mysterious power.
The best view here would be seen in spring, when the trees begin to bud, or in winter, when the trees are covered with snow. Many photographers, who come both from inside and outside of Nagano, visit the place in such seasons.
